Hong Kong's external merchandise trade statistics are compiled based on information contained in import/export declarations. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is a separate customs territory, as stated in "The Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China". Import/export declaration is also required of Hong Kong's merchandise trade with Chinese Mainland, and statistics relating to this are included in Hong Kong's external merchandise trade statistics.

Updated commodity classification for trade statistics in "Standard International Trade Classification" (SITC) can be referred to C&SD website.https://www.censtatd.gov.hk/en/page_94.html.
The trade statistics system of Hong Kong is primarily designed for compilation of trade statistics at aggregate and broad commodity level for macroeconomic analysis, rather than for monitoring or tracking the imports and exports of certain commodities. Although quality assurance procedures are in place, some data may still be subject to reporting or other errors, especially at detailed commodity code level. Yet, the overall impact on the aggregate trade statistics should still be negligible.
